Colour is the loudest thing you can wear without saying a word.

Colour tattooing is its own language, and on Whyte Avenue we treat it that way. Phantom Avenue is a custom studio on the second floor in Old Strathcona, Edmonton, where saturated work gets the time and the layering it actually needs. This is the style for people who want their skin to hold a palette, not just a line. Bold or soft, painterly or graphic, the point is pigment that reads clearly across the room.

The technique

Colour is built in passes, not in a single hit. Your artist lays down a base, then works back over it to push saturation, blend gradients, and let one tone bleed into the next without going muddy. Pigment choice matters as much as the drawing itself, because some colours sit denser than others and need to be packed differently to stay even. Done right, the work looks deliberate up close and reads instantly from a distance.

Who it suits

Colour suits you if you want energy on the skin and you are not precious about a larger commitment. Saturated work tends to want room to breathe, so it favours pieces with some scale rather than tiny isolated marks. It also rewards patience, since heavy packing and clean blends often mean longer sessions or more than one sitting. If you already know the mood you want before you know the subject, this is usually your style.

How it ages

Be honest with yourself about colour and time. Saturated pigment is beautiful, but as a general rule colour asks more of you than black and grey, and softer or lighter tones can lift first under sun and friction. None of that is a flaw in the work, it is simply how skin and light behave over years. Your habits do most of the heavy lifting here, so follow the aftercare guide closely, keep new work out of strong sun, and expect that a touch-up down the road can bring a faded piece back to full voice.

If you have been sitting on a colour idea, bring it in. Consultations are free, walk-ins are welcome whenever an artist is open, and the studio minimum is $125. Colour work at Phantom Avenue is led by Juan Del Pino, so start there or book a consultation and we will map out the palette before a needle ever touches skin.

Colour tattoos — common questions

Do colour tattoos fade faster than black and grey?
As a general rule, yes, colour tends to soften sooner than black and grey, and lighter tones like yellows and pastels usually lift before darker ones. Black ink is the most stable pigment over time, so monochrome work often holds its contrast longer. The gap comes down to pigment density, placement, and sun exposure more than the artist's hand. Good aftercare and the occasional touch-up keep colour reading the way it should.
Which tattoo colours hold up best on different skin tones?
Every colour reads differently depending on the skin it sits in, because your own undertone acts like a filter over the pigment. Bold, high-contrast tones such as deep reds, blues, and blacks tend to stay legible across a wide range of skin tones, while very pale pastels can get quieter on deeper or warmer skin. The honest answer is that it depends on you, which is why we talk palette and placement at the consultation. Your artist will steer the colour choices toward what will actually stay vivid on your skin.
Can colour be added to an existing black and grey tattoo?
Often, yes, depending on how the original was packed and how it has settled. Adding colour over or around established black and grey is a layering job, and dense or dark areas may limit how brightly new pigment can show through. Your artist will look at the healed piece first and tell you honestly what colour can do for it. Bring the existing tattoo to a consultation so we can plan the additions before committing.

What our clients say

Came in as a walk-in planning to get something small, but left with a piece I've wanted for so long and I'm obsessed. Michael's attention to detail and fine line work is unreal — so clean and precise. Definitely found my go-to artist.

Was walking down Whyte Ave after lunch, saw the sign, decided to take a look inside and was greeted by a welcoming team. Michael was attentive while I described my idea — came back with some amazing sketches and from then I knew I was getting my piece done. Quick and clean.
